So now after completing your business start up and planning stages you are looking at building your own website (you can do it quite easily) and you will need to decide on your domain name if you haven't done so already as well as a good reliable company to host your website.

►What should I look for in a domain name?

 

Just like your business name, your domain name should reflect what type of business you are though you have to keep it short so that visitors to your site find it easy to type in to their browser. You will need to include as many keywords as possible in your domain name. For example if you are a garden lighting service in Cairns, then your domain would be something like 'www.cairnsgardenlighting.com.au'. Don't try and be tricky with your domain name, it simply doesn't work. You end up confusing people, they find your name hard to remember and will lose you positioning in the search engines. ►What type of domain do I require?

If you are operating solely within Australia, you should purchase a com.au domain name and possibly a .com also. If you are going to be operating internationally then you will need to purchase your domain in each country that you intend to do business in just to be safe. All of these domains can be pointed to your one chosen domain name and your website host can organise this for you.

 

►What should I look for in a Website Hosting Company?

 

You are searching for a company that can offer you value for money for the size site that you need so start small and upgrade if you need to. Ask advice from the host as to what size site you will need according to how many visitors you intend to have to your site.
Most importantly you need your hosting company to have excellent support including a real live telephone number with real live people answering the phone (within Australia) that you can call if you need to.

Email support only is simply not good enough!


We also want our hosting company to offer a shopping cart service and a website builder (a good one) if possible. Whoever you are hosting your website with is also who you are buying your domain from.

  • If you have chosen Lis Hosting because you would like to use their free website builder then you have access to a free shopping cart that is linked to your Paypal account (and other merchants) so you will not require any other shopping cart service.

 

Please note that if you are looking to sell only digital products online such as Ebooks, Music, Software etc then you will need a service such as E-junkie to help you do this.
